About Jacq

Original art that makes a statement.

Our surroundings matter.

My surroundings are important to me, as I'm sure yours are to you. I realised how important when I flew the family nest. Growing up, I'd felt slightly unsettled at home without understanding why. Nothing majorly wrong - I had a very loving home - but just a general feeling of unease.  Moving into my own space gave me the feeling that I imagine asthmatics have when their inhalers kick in - a feeling of openness and relief. I could breathe.

I'd rather go without than buy something that doesn't suit my taste. Maybe you feel the same way? I've been known to get as far as the checkout before returning a much-needed functional item to it's shelf, if I feel I can't live with the design.

William Morris urged us:

"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

This is one of my favourite quotes, though I'd replace "or" with "and". In my opinion, functionality is never an  excuse for terminal ugliness. "Beautiful" doesn't quite hits the mark either. A piece can make a statement, or be thought-provoking, dramatic, or emotional, without being beautiful. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly concur with Morris's sentiment. Have nothing in your home that you do not know to fill a purpose, and believe to suit your taste.

Once I've bought something, I usually love it forever. I have pieces that work together, even though they came from different ends of the country or have an age gap of decades. I rarely regret a purchase, but deeply regret not buying something that cried out to me. The falcon sculpture I didn't buy when I was mid-20s and trying to be sensible, or the heathland pastel I dithered over too long, while someone savvier snapped it up. I hope they continue to love it as much as I did.

Every time we choose the perfect piece of original art for our home, we're not just buying an image, we're expressing ourselves. Making a statement. This is what I've selected. This resonates with who I am.

A serotonin boost kicks in every time we look at art that causes a positive emotional response.

I'm honoured when someone buys my art, because out of all the possibilities, they've chosen to share their life with something I created. I never take that lightly, which is why my work uses quality materials designed to last.

I'm committed to producing art from my heart. Unique art, beginning with a visual experience that cries out for a creative response. Art that makes a statement and elicits conversations. Art for people who prefer Marmite over vanilla.

Last but not least, I'll only offer my work to be on your wall if I'd happily display it on my own.

Because our surroundings matter.
