The Spirals Collection

Art inspired by spirals in nature - predominantly ammonites, but also shells, wildlife and plant forms.

Artist Statement (Spirals)

There's something inherently delightful about spirals.

An ammonite; shell structure; vine tendrils; the curl of a seahorse tail;

Fibonacci spirals on cones or sunflowers...

Maybe it's the understated perfection of the curve as it increases in size.

Perhaps the simultaneous complexity and simplicity in a single structure.

The more I look, the more examples I find.

Observation reveals spiral variety: logarithmic, Fibonacci, Archimedean, helix....

I am reminded of lines from a Norman MacCaig poem:

Ammonite

"And my mind observed to me,

Or I to it, how ordinary

Extraordinary things are or

How extraordinary ordinary

Things are, like the nature of the mind

And the process of observing."

This is why I create.

To explore that which seems ordinary,

and reveal the extraordinary.
