What inspired me?

Ammonite fossils.

I can't stop buying ammonites! That classic spiral pattern, stunning crystal interior, tawny colour palette, and varying structure pattern - it all adds up to my ideal inspiration.

Acrylic paints lend themselves to this type of painting. The colours are bold without being garish, and the varying opacities allow marks to be layered, modified or obliterated.

Ammonites are a multi-patterned organism. Inside, the structure is separated into chambers, by walls known as septa. Outside, intricate lines called suture patterns mark where the septa meets the outer shell.

Often this is an oak-leaf pattern, but many other patterns are possible, as they vary between species.

This painting is a celebration of ammonite patterns: an amalgamation of structure, texture, colour and shape. I liked the fractal quality (pattern recurring in smaller scales) of this painting.  No matter the size of circle, there will always be room for smaller ammonites.
