Artist Statement
This statement relates to my art generally.

Pattern. Contrasts. Layers. Depth. These overlooked
or hidden aspects of the natural world delight and intrigue.
I’m open to the unexpected or mysterious: a seam of colour or texture snaking through a plain surface, a contrast
of exterior and interior, repetition of colour or shape.
Layers that are pierced, incised or eroded.
My art begins outdoors, with observation, photographs
and sketches revealing the subject’s appearance, structure and character. Cropping and enlarging removes
the unnecessary; reveals the drama of pattern or formation. Assessment leads to adjustment - a composition tweak; emphasis of shape or texture; simplification.
Potential that makes my heart sing.
Construction is a moulded shape, a built form, or a flat plane. I revel in the feel of acrylic on brush or knife, as colours merge. Gels and pastes are manipulated or extruded, scored or pierced. Fragmented layers allow a tantalising glimpse of the depth beneath.
My art is rooted in the forces that have shaped nature through millennia, dictating appearance, structure,
and growth. Yet from that comes something entirely new; contemporary work that leads the viewer to discover what might otherwise remain unseen.
