Artist Statement (Mystique)
The tantalising unknown inspires this collection.
As a child, I loved rock-pooling.
Not just the excitement of catching a crab or seeing a miniature fish, but the thought of the unknown.
The possibility of something incredible hiding in those mysterious depths below the kelp.
I don't know what I hoped to discover. Sunken treasure? A new species unknown to science?
To this child's mind those pools held infinite possibilities, all unknown and mysterious and exciting.
Decades later, I'm still fascinated by that sweet spot between mystery, discovery and awe.
This collection draws from my interest in symbols, calligraphy, lettering systems, ancient history and nature.
The juxtaposition of natural and man-made elements is unsettling, and hints at other cultures, perhaps even other-worldliness.
Asemic writing suggests a meaning a fraction beyond our understanding.
Gold, silver and bronze signify value.
The Mystique Collection elicits curiosity, It invites the viewer to muse, to make connections, and draw their own conclusions about origins, cultures and interpretations.
