Chaos Control
What inspired this painting?
A colourful boulder at Kimmeridge Bay.
I love subjects that inspire unusual paintings. Dramatic shapes, flowing lines, complex surfaces. Contrasts: chaos against control; pattern versus plain; structure next to randomness. A boulder at Kimmeridge Bay gave just such inspiration.
Every Jurassic coast beach is inspiring, but Kimmeridge Bay raises the bar. To the east the boulders are piled high, a treasure trove of rich tawny colours and eroded patterns.
Westward lies steep cliffs, banded with jagged rocks, which soar above flat slabs of fossil-encrusted shale and sandstone.
This painting was inspired by a single boulder. One side was plain, the other a riot of tawny colours. A row of organically shaped marks, with a hint of square-ness, bisected the stone.
The concept was born: a balance of flamboyance and structure.
Riotous patches of colour. Unconstrained shapes.
Plain background.
A column of organic shapes. Rectangular formations.
Wildness versus organisation.
Pattern harnessed.
Randomness retained.
A balance triumvirate.
