What inspired me?
A rock at Kimmeridge Bay
Every Jurassic coast beach is inspiring, but Kimmeridge Bay raises the bar. To the east the boulders are piled high, a treasure trove of rich colours and eroded patterns. Westward lies steep cliffs, banded with jagged rocks, which soar above flat slabs of fossil-encrusted shale and sandstone.
This painting was inspired by a single boulder. One side a riot of tawny colours, the other plain. A row of organically shaped marks, with a hint of square-ness, bisecting the stone.
The concept was born: a balance of flamboyance and structure.
Riotous patches of colour. Unconstrained shapes.
Plain background.
A column of organic shapes. Rectangular formations.
Wildness versus organisation.
Pattern harnessed.
Randomness retained.
A balance triumvirate.
