What inspired me?

Pieces of Noreena Jasper.

Colourful or monochrome; boldly or subtly patterned. Jaspers are an artist’s delight.

This painting was inspired by Noreena jasper, a mineral found in Western Australia and named after the Noreena station where it was discovered.

The colour palette is always comprised of shades of yellow, red and grey, with any of those being the dominant colour. Patterns may be intricate or bold, according to the individual piece of stone. Colours may be distinct or may smudge gradually from one to another. The character changes with each pattern and colour combination.

Both the colours and the angularity in this painting suggest boldness, strength and drama. The thin lines and points are reminiscent of thorns, though the spikiness is softened by the pink smudged background. The mauvy-grey lines imply shadows, hinting at a three
dimensional effect.
