Hidden Depths
What inspired this painting?
Rock erosion
Erosion appeals to me. Surfaces change over time, as pieces are worn away by weather or tide. A crusted surface cracks, which then gradually widens to reveal the inner layers.
I've found many such rocks at the coast. These were a starting point for an experiment in texture. An opprtunity to use layers of modelling paste to create depth and interest.
Sometimes an observation is simply a starting point. An idea that generates a creative journey, rather like a line of dominoes. As one falls, it sets another in motion. One creative step leads to another, and so the piece evolves. Once the initial layer of tan was in place, the turquoise colour was chosen for contrast and drama.
I revel in the evolution. Watching the piece take shape. It's not an easy way to work, but certainly a fulfilling one.
