Polyhedroid Agate
Colourful agate slices are a familiar sight in any gemstone shop, recognised by concentric bands of colour, varying transparency and druzy crystals. The pattern makes them visually appealing.
In Brazil - and only Brazil - you can find a variety of agate, if you are lucky: Polyhedroid Agate. It is made of sections that each resemble polyhedrons, each section nestling perfectly among its companions. The colour palette is usually blues, greys and white, with shades of brown and orange.
This piece was an opportunity to explore depth and lustre. Physical depth, as some parts have been carved, and implied depth through use of tone to deceive the eye. Marble dust created texture and mica flakes added sparkle.
