Rock formations, patterns and textures
Despite being a relatively small island, the UK is rich in geological variation. From dark slates and shales, through red sandstones, and creamy limestone, to pale chalk, there’s
a rich colour palette to enjoy. Faults and folds, erosion and deposits, add texture and interest.
All of the textures and patterns in this piece have been observed around the UK, from Devon to Sutherland. Even
a single venue can yield a surprising range of patterns. Some
of the patterns and textures may be predictable. Some are certainly unexpected. The variety must be celebrated.
Each small square panel was sanded, primed with acrylic primer, and then textured with Modelling Paste. The techniques include: extruding the paste; drilling; stencilling; scratching or dragging a tool; layering; pressing an object into wet paste; spreading the paste with a knife. Each leaves its own mark.
Mediums were used, to create a different lustres and opacity.
When dry, each piece was painted before being arranged to form a cohesive design.
